Mahoney Environmental Selected as BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport’s Provider of Used Cooking Oil Recycling for Renewable Fuels
Fraport Maryland is excited to announce our partnership with Mahoney Environmental and BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. On March 9, 2023, Fraport Maryland, Mahoney Environmental, and BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport launched Solution ZEROTM – a Zero waste, Zero cost initiative.
BWI Marshall Airport is the 7th major commercial airport in the United States to work with Mahoney Environmental and launch a zero-waste sustainability program that collaborates with partners to collect used cooking oil and convert them into renewable fuels. There are over 50+ hospitality partners at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport that are recycling their used cooking oil through this initiative.
In 2020, Fraport Maryland initiated the conversation with Mahoney Environmental to evaluate the used cooking oil collection and recycling process for the entire concessions program. The evaluation included discussing safety concerns, using equipment, time in motion analytics, and ways to make the process more efficient.
“We are excited to be working with another premier US airport. Our used cooking oil collection systems and processes are specifically designed to eliminate safety concerns for restaurant employees who work with hot oils. This new project will also enable BWI Marshall Airport to become more sustainable,” said Dave Kimball, President & CEO of Mahoney Environmental.
About Mahoney Environmental
Since 1953, Mahoney Environmental® has helped foodservice companies turn used cooking oil and other waste products into useful products. Mahoney controls the entire recycling process—from equipment set-up to collection, to processing, to finished product to capture more value from used oils and pass that added value on to restaurant operators and the environment.
Mahoney Environmental® is a licensed EPA recycler, and all their facilities can recycle nearly 100% of the materials processed. Mahoney’s goal is to be the premier back-of-the-house service provider to foodservice operators nationwide — from national and regional chains to independent restaurants to airports throughout the United States. In 2020, Mahoney Environmental was acquired by Neste (NESTE.HE), the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, and developing chemical recycling to combat the plastic waste challenge.
